Bavarian Apple Torte

Flour, sifted


Filling:

1/4 c.
Sugar
1 8 oz. pkg.
Softened cream cheese
1
Egg
1/2 tsp.
Lemon zest
1/4 tsp.
Vanilla
1/8 tsp.
Salt


Topping:

1/4 c.
Almonds
1/3 c.
Sugar
1/2 tsp.
Cinnamon

Preparation Procedures:

1. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Peel, core, and slice apples. Place slices in a shallow baking dish, cover with foil, and place in the oven for 20 minutes. 

2. Cream together butter, sugar, shortening, vanilla, and salt. Blend in flour. Pat into bottom and 1 1/2 inches up sides of a slightly greased 9" spring form pan. Set aside. 

3. For filling, beat together sugar and cream cheese. Add egg, lemon zest, vanilla extract, and salt. Beat until smooth. Turn into pastry-lined pan. Top with warm partially cooked apples slices. 

4. Mix together almonds, sugar, and cinnamon. Sprinkle over apples. 

5. Set pan on a baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes, until crust is nicely browned and apples cooked. Cool before cutting. 

Pan Size & Preparation:  Slightly greased 9" spring form pan, baking sheet 

Oven Temperature:  400 degrees 

Baking Time:  20 minutes to partially bake apples, 45 minutes to finish 

Test for Doneness:  Crust browned, apples cooked
